REID Bikes Web Design

The brief

Reid approached us over Christmas of 2020 looking for a new agency to redevelop their website. Having had a poor previous experience they were left with a site that wasn’t fit for the traffic levels it was receiving and in turn was fairly unstable and filled with bugs.

They were quite clear that they wanted to remain within WordPress and the CMS but wanted a more bespoke build that would handle all their functionality requirements. Everyone at Digital Storm was excited to take this project on, and we’re even more excited to unveil Reid’s new website and show you what we’ve been working on.

Reid are an international distributor of stunning bikes, scooters and watersports gear. In 2009, James Reid saw a gap in the market for bikes that were high-quality, looked great and (most importantly) were affordable. He established Reid in Melbourne, Australia with the aim of making the joy of riding accessible to everyone.

Today, Reid is well-established across the world as a leading brand. Their products are available in over 20 countries through more than 800 retailers around the world. They’ve even had celebrity endorsements from the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger proudly riding the Zeus Fat Bike.

As they wanted the site redeveloped from the ground up it made sense to also address new designs and since we were developing bespoke we could focus on streamlining the back-end experience as well. We wanted the new designs to elevate the brand and better reflect the global nature of Reid.

Our response

Our solution was a custom WordPress theme built for Reid based on the designs we came up with. The new theme not only tackled the creative designs, but also included comprehensive and clear back-end content management and an array of complex custom functionality including geolocation, an interactive map directory of stockists, comprehensive product pages with image hotspots and so much more which can be explored below:

Visually, the new site took on a luxury feel utilising bold imagery, fonts and design elements to tell Reid’s story. As you explore the website, we convey the brand’s identity. We also created an intuitive and interactive navigation interface with buttons resembling bike cranks that magnetically lock onto the user’s cursor.

It was important to showcase Reid’s extensive product range above all else and one of the big ways we achieved this was a visual, full-page menu that feeds through ‘Hot and Popular Products’ per range. The main menu gives visitors all the information they need to find products, contact Reid, find a distributor or learn more about the brand. We also integrated a global sitewide search enhancing the user-experience on reidbikes.com and ensuring the site is functional and easy to navigate to any one of 200+ product pages.

The product pages are the crème-de-la-crème of the entire project… even if we do say so ourselves. Placing a featured front and centre, with interactive image hotspots highlighting specifics about the product, we also created this section to change the background and bike colours simultaneously.

As you scroll down the page, you’re invited to interact with different sections to find out unique details and specifications about each product. Learn more about their #BuyOnePlantOne campaign, find your nearest retailer or see the product in all it’s glory in the image gallery or video.

Taking international audiences into account the product pages automatically change price and currency symbol based on the users location which is determined from the users IP. The price section also uses geolocation settings to display statements such as “This product is not available in your country” or “Please contact your nearest distributor for pricing information” to certain locations. We also developed manual controls for the user to switch between centimetres and metres or feet and inches.

The Reid site is non-transactional, rather the purpose of the website was to showcase the full range and signpost people to their nearest distributor. Despite not being an online store, the product categories include functionality to filter by colour, location, gender and style. All with the focus of improving the user-experience and showcasing the full product range. By selecting ‘Show Products in my Country’ the site uses our custom geolocation functionality to filter the full product range to products sold in their location.

Using Google Maps JS API we developed an interactive map based directory for users to find their nearest stockists. We then further integrated this with the geolocation functionality to automatically adjust to the users location. Once you’ve found a dealer, you can get directions straight to their shop with the click of a button.

The distributors needed access to a selection of general and personal admin, sales information and promotional or marketing resources. To achieve this we developed a ‘distributor’ user account area which is integrated directly with Reid’s CRM system to house distributors materials.

Overall, we feel our solution achieved everything that we set out to do in this brief. Everyone at Digital Storm really enjoyed working with this amazing brand to bring their vision to life. The website is functional with dynamic design that we know will stand the test of time.
